Columbia County is home to many creative entrepreneurs, and one of its latest rising stars is HIVE designs, a colorful and funky jewelry brand founded by local designer Jessica Maddox. We sat down with Jessica to learn more about her journey, inspiration, and what makes HIVE designs stand out.
From Dream to Reality
Q: What inspired you to start HIVE designs?
Jessica Maddox: "I always wanted to start a jewelry line, but one day I decided I could either ‘want to’ or I could ‘do.’ I saw a similar style that was very high-end and expensive and thought, ‘I can make that cheaper.’ At first, I made jewelry just for myself, but after sharing my designs on social media, the interest exploded, and HIVE designs was born."
Jewelry That Stands Out
Q: How would you describe the style of HIVE designs?
Jessica Maddox: "HIVE designs is all about fun jewelry, not fine jewelry. I create everything from dainty and classic pieces to bold and funky statement accessories. The best part is that every piece can be customized, making each item unique and personal."
Q: What inspires your designs?
Jessica Maddox: "My go-to outfit is jeans and a white top, so I wanted to create pieces that pop on a minimalist wardrobe but also complement flashier outfits. I love experimenting with colors and unique shapes to make each design stand out."
More Than Just Jewelry
Q: HIVE designs has expanded beyond jewelry. Can you tell us more?
Jessica Maddox: "Yes! Hive started as a jewelry brand, but it has now evolved into a full-fledged lifestyle brand, offering shirts, hats, and more. But beyond the products, what I love most is the community that has formed around HIVE designs. Social media, especially Instagram, has brought together a group of amazing women who connect through this brand."
A Columbia County Native
Q: How has Columbia County influenced your creativity?
Jessica Maddox: "I grew up in Evans and now live in Harlem, so Columbia County is home for me. I find inspiration in the quiet ambiance of local coffee shops, which is the perfect place for me to think and create."
Q: What are your favorite spots in Columbia County?
Jessica Maddox: "I love taking my kids to Evans Library and Park. When the weather is nice, I recommend kayaking at Betty’s Branch—it’s a must-do! For dining, our go-to restaurant is Poblanos."
The Future of HIVE designs
Q: Where do you see HIVE designs in the future?
Jessica Maddox: "My ultimate goal is to see HIVE designs picked up by a major department store. With its growing popularity and strong community support, that dream seems more attainable every day."
HIVE designs is more than just accessories—it’s a brand built on passion, creativity, and connection. Whether you're looking for a bold statement piece or a subtle everyday accessory, HIVE designs has something for everyone.
