Educational Family Experiences

Start your morning off on the surface of the moon! Well, not really but Heggie’s Rock Preserve is a 130-acre outcropping of granite which will have the kids feeling like they are in an otherworldly environment. The exposed granite, which rises about 70 feet above the nearby creeks, is from the same vein as Stone Mountain. This outcrop forms dish gardens also known as vernal pools, creating a home for very rare plants and invertebrates. Heggie’s Rock is a site protected by the Nature Conservancy, so, pre-arranged tours are necessary but can be made for groups of 30 or less by calling 404.873.6946.

After lunch, take the kids to Reed Creek Nature Park and Interpretive Center where you can look for wildlife in an active wetland area. Start with a stroll on the boardwalk over the wetland to view the many animals and plants of this ecosystem. Then, head over to the demonstration and pollination gardens. Finally, check out the Interpretive Center to see the ambassador animals on display. Local tip: Reed Creek Park offers several educational programs. Make sure to check their website for a listing of those programs.
